Program Overview
Students begin studying either French, Latin, or Spanish in 7th grade and continue the same language in 8th grade. After successful completion of the Middle School Foreign Language program, most students will be placed in the second year level of the language in high school. French
• 5-Day trip to Quebec in 8th Grade
• Grand Concours (National French Exam)
• Field trips to the MFA and other places to learn about French culture
• Hands-on projects such as making model French castles, Mardi Gras masks, and Senegalese batik
Latin
• Study of Classical Mythology and Roman culture/history
• National Latin Exam
• Curriculum-based games
• Latin quotes, mottoes, abbreviations, and phrases
• Extensive study of roots, word derivation, and grammar
Spanish
• Celebrations for holidays such as Day of the Dead and Cinco de Mayo
• National Spanish Exam
• Fun, hand-on activities that reinforce students' daily oral and aural proficiencies
 
Faculty

Melissa Buganski majored in Spanish at Siena College in Loudonville, NY. She has spent time in Madrid and Barcelona, Spain, has studied abroad in Santiago, Dominican Republic, and lived with a Dominican family for eight months. She is originally from New York but moved to Boston in 2002.

Jae Guttadauro has been a Spanish teacher in Marblehead since January 2000. He holds a B.A. in International Business from Bryant College and a M.Ed. in Secondary Education from Salem State College. He has passionately devoted more than half of his life to the study of Spanish and has taken courses in both Spain and Costa Rica.

Kristen Russett has been teaching French at MMS since 2001. She holds a B.A. in French Language and Literature from Bates College and a M.A. in International Relations from Boston University. She studied in Paris at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques and at the Université de Paris. Previously, Mme. Russett worked in the field of international health in various organizations, including the Harvard School of Public Health. She has extensive travel experience in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.

Klara Sands has joined us as our new Latin teacher. She has previously taught Latin and French at Wayland Middle School and Swampscott High School. More information to come!
